RE: [Eclipse Phase] Ozymandias
Synopsis of Mission 01-A:
  • Meet up in the city of Valles-New Shanghai to investigate an incident at the University of Mars.
  • It involved the Rosetta Project of the Lafontaine-Poole Group, a division of the university dedicated to sophontology. (Cognitive sciences expanded to include uplifts, AI, and aliens.)
  • The incident itself was specifically a student and volunteer, Ziggy, who went insane. Hacking his patient file revealed neurological damage, especially in the brain centers involving semantic memory and language. This type of damage is uncommon but might be the results of a really bad batch of mind-enhancing drugs. (Fortunately for Ziggy, the damage is reversible and he's undergoing treatment.)
  • Chatting with other student volunteers revealed the Rosetta Project involves the construction of a super-language that can easily convey highly complex concepts. Although impossible to learn for any human, turning it into a skillsoft that can be loaded into skillware (an artifical network in the brain that allows the recipient to acquire skills without having to learn them) can allow cutting edge multi-disciplinarian research to be conducted more efficiently, as it would allow participants to resort to their super-language to quickly explain expert jargon and ideas. This very paragraph itself could've been condensed into a single sentence with the Rosetta language. (Recommended reading: Linguistic Relativity.)
  • Many other students and some professors have tested this language without any ill effect. Only Ziggy had a breakdown while using the language.
  • The project is spearheaded by Dr Hugh Ahrenberg (evolutionary sophontology), Dr Stefan Wladerycz (philosophy and multi-disciplinarian meta-academics), Dr Cho Moon Yoon (linguistics), and Dr Herman-Alexander Singer (AI sophontology). All of these are reputable, experienced scholars.

What you need to understand about the apocalypse is that you aren't Mad Max. You're part of the skull pyramid in the background.

RE: [Eclipse Phase] Ozymandias
thoughts for next time:
- Sam'll consult his criminal contacts to see who deals the dope around campus and whether or not Ziggy was shooting marijuanas (or whatever it is that kids do). it might be a dead end, but if we can rule out drug use, then that's one less thing to consider.

@Jeroen, I updated your post requesting me posting your character so you can edit it yourself.

I did my best, there are unclear corrections and things I really couldn't quite read. I also don't know how you wrote down your scores, so I assumed they were written down without the aptitude/morph bonuses included.

If you need them to correct your character if I assumed wrongly, here's your aptitudes:
Code:
COG         20
COO         20 +5
INT         10
REF         15
SAV         10
SOM         20 +10
WIL         10

First: About the week after (6th). Then it's the 2nd day of Easter. How is everyone standing availability-wise?

Second: Arik and I were thinking about buying Cards against humanity together. What are your opinions on that? The base set (550 cards) would be around 37 Euro and the base set + all 5 expansions (total of 1000+ cards) would be around 70 Euro. Both with shipping included.

Third: Dinner suggestions for Monday Smile
Due to Easter a lot of the Bonus is breakfast/lunch oriented. So not a lot of diner-based discounts.
1) Yakitori

RE: [Eclipse Phase] Ozymandias
As I said I would, I'll post some headlines from the Martian news media. This will help with getting a better perspective on the world and can be fun, hopefully.

Politics: Promised reforms fail to materialize

One year after elections and the infugee crisis is still largely as it is. "The Consortium promised to take a critical look at the practices which systematically exploit infugees as cheap sources of labor. But the steps taken are largely symbolic ones meant to obfuscate the lack of the promised real, concrete measures that are necessary to resolve the crisis." So concludes the damning report of the independent Chase committee.

Full text of the Chase committee's report.
The Consortium Ministry's response to the report.
Fa Jing: responsible partner or parasitic employer?
This miner worked off a 5-year contract in just eight months thanks to this weird trick. Managers hate him.

RE: [Eclipse Phase] Ozymandias
Unfortunately: Change of plans Sad

I was @ my GP this morning because of a painful toe. Apparently it was an ingrown nail. It was still small, so my GP could fix it by partially removing my toenail. But now I have to take 2 days rest and I must keep my feet up and use it as little as possible.

So I won't be able to go to Robin tonight Sad

Now my suggestion is: Can we play @ my place tonight?
The diner plans will change a bit since D already bought ingredients for tonight diner for her and the kids. Diner would be Couscous with bread and an assortment of meat (lamb-sausage, hamburger etc.).

Is this doable for all ye peeps?

Ouch! That sounds painful. Glad it's taken care of though, hope it improves quickly!

As for relocation, I'm cool with that.

RE: [Eclipse Phase] Ozymandias
Synopsis of Mission 01-B:
  • After checking a criminal network, came into contact with Comosus (aka "Cosmo") a fairly harmless weed dealer at campus. He remembers Ziggy but not as a client. Ziggy is apparently a square.
  • Further background checks revealed that Ziggy is an AI programming student. He and his parents are mild bioconservatives. As such they would indulge in only a minimal level of body- or mind-altering procedures.
  • Despite the previous revelation Ziggy did eventually have skillware implanted, the implant that allows users to upload skills. Such implants are overwhelmingly common amongst academics and practically mandatory for certain projects. The clinic at which this was done seems legit.
  • Checking with a friend of Ziggy's it turned out that he most likely joined as a volunteer for the Rosetta Project to get closer to Kate Milan, a linguistics student. The friend also confirmed that Ziggy is a square who would never go for substance abuse.
  • Made some connections with the professors in charge of the project. They seem fairly relaxed about the incident because they have conducted numerous tests and double-checks, coming to the conclusion that Ziggy's incident is unfortunate but not caused by the Rosetta Project. It's up to his medical caretakers to investigate his condition now.
  • Dr Ahrenberg noticed the team's battle-ready morphs and assumed they were sent by "Namir". The team didn't deny this. He assured them that this incident wouldn't set back the project too much. The real problem is Cognite - they feel the product is good enough for now and want to start commercial development. As such they are unwilling to extend their funding for research much longer.
  • Some other random factoids learned in no particular order: The type of brain damage he suffered is fairly unique, only seen when mental implant jobs are horribly botched; The Rosetta Project is currently in "generation 319"; Ziggy's medical file shows no implants or modifications other than the basic biomods, cortical stack, mesh inserts, and of course the skillware; The skillware was installed about a year ago and Ziggy had successfully used it before for other skillsofts without incident; Dr Ahrenberg says the Rosetta skillsoft uses up all of the memory space of the skillware and causes mild to moderate headaches or memory leaks, but such side effects are common with prototypes (which the team's own programmer confirms); The team has acquired the make and serial number of Ziggy's specific skillware, which is of a standard brand and series with no serious issues being known or showing up on medical scans other than signs of highly intensive use during the incident.

What you need to understand about the apocalypse is that you aren't Mad Max. You're part of the skull pyramid in the background.
